4 Natural Oils To Combat Arthritis

Walnut Oil

Any search for oils that give you arthritis relief begins with walnut oil, a nut high in omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3s in walnuts may be directly able to help with joint pain, says Sheila West, a nutrition scientist of Pennsylvania State University. Early studies have suggested that joint damage can be counteracted with plant-based omega 3’s, although these studies are still in their initial phases. Another study had people with arthritis add flax seed oil and walnuts to their diet. This decreased the levels of C-reactive protein, the compound that measures levels of inflammation in arthritis patients.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is another heart-health foods just like walnut oil, but it contains monosaturated fatty acids that help to lower cholesterol levels in people. Olive oil also contains oleocanthal, which is a compound that has effects similar to those of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. This means that olive oil may be able to directly lower inflammation and provide some arthritis pain relief. Of the different olive oil varieties, extra-virgin olive oil tends to have the most helpful properties, as it has a higher level of oleocanthal, according to Paul Breslin of the Monell Chemical Senses Centre. Essential Oils

It isn’t just dietary oils that can help with your arthritis pain. A recent study was published in Phytotherapy Research that found the topical application of essential oil helped to reduce the severity of arthritis in laboratory tests. There are an enormous amount of essential oils that exist on the market, collected as they are from different types of plants. A study that was published in Ethnopharmacology in 2003 found that the essential oil of eucalyptus leaves in particular seem to posses incredible anti-inflammatory. Echinacea, thyme, oregano, sweet basil and myrtle have all been found to have similarly beneficial anti-inflammatory. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Fish Oil

Fish Oil is another oil, like walnut oil, that is extremely high in omega-3s. However, unlike flax or walnut oil, fish oil contains a unique omega-3 that you can’t find in plant-based oils. Fish oil has DHA and EPA that reduce inflammation, blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Recent studies have proven that fish oil can drastically decrease joint pain and stiffness, and that taking fish oil supplements can decrease the need for arthritis medication.
