■ Baking Soda: Baking soda has long been used in oral care. It can be used to whiten teeth and remove plaque, simply dissolve some it in some water and apply it to your teeth. ■ Sea Salt: Dip your toothbrush in some sea salt and brush as you usually do. If your teeth are on the sensitive side, dissolve the sea salt in some water before using. The hydrogen peroxide will work to whiten teeth and clean them like conventional toothpaste. ■ Dry Brushing: Simple as it may seem, it still works to remove dirt and plaque, however its not as effective on any smells. ■ Herbal Tooth Powder: Herbal tooth powders are perfect substitutes for conventional toothpastes. They work to heal inflammation and infections in your mouth. ■ Brush With Pure Water: Brushing with just water can work to remove dirt and plaque, but like dry brushing it doesn’t work to remove any odours you might have. ■ All Natural Soaps: Natural soaps can be used to clean your teeth, but as you might suspect it’s going to taste like you have soap in your mouth. ■ Tooth Soap: Or you can use some soap that is designed to specifically clean teeth. ■ Coconut Oil: Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties which make it perfect for maintaining your oral health, plus your breath will smell great. ■ Oil Pulling: This isn’t so much a product, but a process. Swig a tablespoon of oil in your mouth to clean out any dirt or plaque and then brush with water. ■ Oral Irrigation: This device uses pulses of water to clean debris out from between your teeth and gums but finding it can be sometimes tricky. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); ■ Essential Oils: You can find essential oils in most supermarkets and pharmacies, but before using them make sure they can be taken orally. A good choice is peppermint; just use 2 drops on a wet toothbrush and brush like you normally do.

3 DIY Toothpaste Recipes

These are some great ways to clean your teeth naturally, but you can also easily combine these ingredients and make your very own, all natural toothpaste.

1. The Basics This simple toothpaste is great for single use, so adjust the amounts to how much toothpaste you want to use. ■ 1 teaspoon of baking soda ■ ½ teaspoon of finely ground sea salt ■ 1 drop of peppermint, clove, or citrus essential oil ■ A few drops of water

Mix the ingredients into a bowl until they form a paste. Then just scoop it on to your toothbrush and scrub away.

2. Vegan Toothpaste Although all natural toothpastes are better for you, some of them may contain animal glycerin unless specified otherwise. This DIY toothpaste is perfect if you prefer a vegan option. ■ 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin ■ 4 tablespoons of baking soda ■ ½ a teaspoon of guar gum ■ 8 tablespoons of water ■ 5 drops of peppermint, clove, or citrus essential oil

Place all the ingredients, except the essential oils, into a pot and cook on low heat. Stir frequently for 5 minutes or until the mixture starts to form into a paste. Wait for it to cool before adding the essential oils to taste. Store in a sterile jar at room temperature and enjoy. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 3. Peppermint-Coconut Toothpaste This recipe swaps out the glycerin for coconut oil. The coconut oil and essential oils should hide the flavor of the other ingredients, but you can add some stevia or a sweeter paste. ■ 6 teaspoons of baking soda ■ ¼ teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide ■ 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (warm enough to be liquid, which means above 76 degrees F) ■ 10 drops peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil

Mix the ingredients in a bowl until it becomes a proper paste. If the mixture is too dry, add more baking soda. If it is too runny, add more coconut oil. You can taste it as you prepare it to see if you want to add more essential oil as well. To protect the hydrogen peroxide, store in an opaque container and use like normal toothpaste.
